The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India kicks off discussions on a regulatory pathway for cell-based meat

India’s food regulatory authority, The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and Humane Society International/India (HSI/India) conducted a roundtable discussion on 13th Mat 2019, on the development of a regulatory framework for cell-based meat. This roundtable marked the initiation of FSSAI’s efforts to develop policies for cell-based meat. The roundtable, which included all stakeholders from research institutions, start-ups, and civil society, entailed a detailed discussion on the science of cell-based meat, the current state of the industry, potential safety risks, and consumer acceptance, among others. Headed by Chairperson, FSSAI Smt. Rita Teaotia and CEO, FSSAI Shri Pawan Kumar Agarwal, the attendees underscored the need to keep food safety as a priority while developing regulations for cell-based meat.
