The ‘Future of Protein’ Summit on August 24th, organized by Humane Society International/India, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, and the Good Food Institute was India’s first ever summit on two revolutionary areas for science and innovation in the food sector – clean meat and plant-based meat. The summit marked the beginning of a paradigm shift towards sustainable protein sources, and away from the current system of intensive animal agriculture. The brilliant line-up of speakers included pioneering scientists, outstanding international and Indian entrepreneurs and prominent policymakers. They underscored the message that plant-based meat and clean meat, or ‘alternative proteins’ are a healthier, sustainable and tastier option – and is the way forward to nourish our country’s population.

The event was divided into three sessions – one each on plant-based meat, clean meat, and how the ecosystem can be built in India. The audience was given an introduction to the alternative meat, a scientist’s outlook, and entrepreneur’s journey in the alternative meat space. Crucial questions on the science behind these alternative meats, consumer acceptance, and regulatory challenges that will be faced to bring these products to market, were answered by the panellists. With more than 250 scientists, entrepreneurs, policy makers, animal welfare advocates, and students in attendance, the event facilitated important discussions between them to promote and initiate research and innovations in plant-based meat and clean meat. The event also saw significant coverage from the media, which demonstrated the growing public interest in the alternative meat sector. Our Chief Guest Hon’ble Union Cabinet Minister Maneka Sanjay Gandhi’s endorsement of the development of this sector was encouraging for the companies and researchers alike.

The success of the event proves that the future of plant-based and clean meat is promising in India. With world-class research institutions such as CCMB promoting the research in this field, and mission driven non-profits such as Humane Society International India and Good Food Institute catalysing the movement towards these humane protein sources, we believe that the alternative meat food ecosystem is not far ahead.
